For awhile, I was inspired to start my own class--researched curriculum, got some materials and met with a local elementary music teacher friend. But, with Nora's arrival and a new position at work, it has sadly fallen to the back burner again. There are many days where I fear "mommy was a musician" is going to be a story to tell like "mommy used to take horseback riding lessons" or "mommy used to talk too much in class".
Something that was once such a part of my identity seems like a long lost friend--full of nostalgia and shoulds, coulds and maybe somedays.
So, when the recent deal came along for the music lessons, we snatched it up. We were excited to have a special activity for Owen as the weather starts to get colder (and it gets dark around 5:30pm). When we were asked to change class times, we didn't know it would be full of 4 and 5 year olds! But, Owen has done a great job and found his voice among the "big kids". He is such a good listener and follows directions well.
On the way home last night, he said "Miss Pam and Miss Carolyn are good teachers". I am always impressed with the creative ideas they come up with and the concepts they are teaching the kids:
Making a drum.
Keeping a steady "heartbeat" to the story.
Rhythm baseball (if they echo the right rhythm, they move to first base)
Handbells by colors
Free dance (hokey pokey featured here)
Even if I feel disconnected from my music, it is nice to see Owen enjoying it. And, the special time together is just as good for me.Not to be outdone is Nora, who has been working on her wave. She seems to do it automatically without much prompting when she sees her daddy.
And, she does this silly smile and squeezes her eyes close for dramatic effect. So far, she seems like she's going to give Owen a run for his money in the chatty and silly departments. Although, she also has his observant streak, too!

Cute! We are doing music again with Griffin this winter. He has impressed me with remembering the lyrics to songs from last winter's session. Keep the ideas logged - someday you'll have the time (and resources) to open your own studio!
