One

One seems far too small a word to reflect the huge impact you have made in our lives. It is nearly impossible to sum up, in just a few words, all that this year has held--how you have changed us and what you have taught us.

How has it only been one year since you arrived into this world? It seems like you have always been here--part of our family.

Yet, how vivid those first moments remain in my mind.  And, really, the first year also includes those amazing months of carrying you, feeling your kicks and turns...and all of those hiccups. Then, the surprising pains of labor, your arrival into this world and that first glimpse of your beautiful face.  You reminded us so much of your brother (with jet black hair instead of his red, of course).

Since birth, you have had such a happy, peaceful demeanor. Looking into your intense, deep blue eyes reminds me that when we allow ourselves to just be, the meaning of life begins to unfold.

One of the sweetest sounds and favorite memories of this entire year is hearing you and Owen in laughing fits. You are two silly peas in a pod.

Your little personality is starting to emerge as you begin to explore the world in new ways.  At 12 months, you are a little chatterbox and like to mimic sounds and words. You are crawling around like a pro, and have so much curiosity and excitement for everything (including electrical outlets).  The therapist has been really impressed with how quickly you are picking things up and working through barriers. It won't be long until you are chasing Owen and Oscar around!

Milestones are always a little bittersweet---they are markers for how far we've come, and where we're headed.  Letting go of the way things were---the comfortable and familiar, and making room for the unknown---for our hopes and dreams.
Your first whirlwind year has been full of snuggles, stories and songs, struggles, mistakes, giggles, lessons...and love. We love you so much, pretty girl. And, we can't wait to see what this year has in store!
